Our college, rooted in the legacy of our founder, Mary Ward, stands as a testament to her vision of education: "Women in time to come will do much." This powerful statement continues to inspire us as we strive to empower our students and foster their holistic development.
In alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP), we recognize the importance of a transformative educational framework that emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and inclusivity. The NEP encourages us to cultivate an environment where every student can flourish, embracing not only academic excellence but also life skills that prepare them for the challenges of the future.
Our commitment to the principles of Mary Ward will guide us as we integrate innovative teaching practices, promote interdisciplinary learning, and support the overall development of our students. Together, we will create a nurturing space that values diversity, encourages collaboration, and empowers our young women to become leaders in their communities.
I look forward to embarking on this journey with all of you, working together to uphold the values of Loreto College and build a brighter future for our students.
Sr. Dr. A. Nirmala

Lord, enlighten my mind with truth; Inflame my heart with love; Inspire my will with courage; Enrich my life with service. Pardon what I have been; Sanctify what I am; And order what I shall be.
Loreto College, Calcutta was founded in 1912 by the Sisters of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM), commonly known as Loreto, a catholic religious order established by Mary Ward in 1609. The College has a rich history marked by its pioneering role in women's education in India and began as an extension of the School Department of Loreto House. A few rooms were allotted to school leavers and they were prepared privately for the university examinations at which they appeared as non-collegiate students. In 1912-1913, it became one of the first women's colleges to gain affiliation to the University of Calcutta, allowing its senior students to sit for university exams. Affiliation was first granted for Intermediate Arts and later for BA (Bachelor of Arts), ISC (Intermediate Science). Additionally, Loreto College was also affiliated for a Licentiate in Teaching (LT) in 1913, further expanding its academic offerings. The college was unique in being allowed to combine its Intermediate Arts and LT classes, a distinction supported by university professors. This was a significant achievement, as it provided young women access to higher education in subjects like biology, sciences, and Indian languages, which were typically reserved for their male counterparts.
Learn MoreLoreto College, Kolkata, was established in 1912 by the Religious of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (I.B.V.M.). The order was founded by MARY WARD (1585-1645), a dynamic English Catholic lady, in an age when Catholics were persecuted in England. Europe was torn by religious dissension and women's rights were generally ignored. A determined visionary, she managed, with the help of some devoted companions, to set up schools for young women.
In 1625, she established a religious order for women with very unusual features. Women religious were usually cloistered, under the jurisdiction of the local bishop, Mary Ward envisioned a very active order, working in the society at large for the education and upliftment of both rich and poor women.
