Introduction
On 12th December 2025, the following students (Alisha Iqbal, Amiya Kar, Anipa Tigga, Shreemanti Datta, Maitrayee Saha) from the Department of B.Ed., Semester 1 conducted the class assembly on the theme, “Special Needs- A Matter of Inclusion and not Seclusion” at Loreto College B.Ed classroom (Room no. 405) to spread social consciousness. The assembly highlighted the physical, psychological, and social requirements of people with special needs while stressing the need for awareness and empathy. By presenting the categories and intensities of special needs, the assembly urged the audience to reflect on the dangers of secluding such people and the importance of including them into the mainstream of society.
Performance Overview
The assembly began with the lighting of candle and incense stick and a flower arrangement which was symbolic of a quiet triumph of goodness over evil. It was succeeded by a reading from the Holy Bible, Corinthians 12:23 describing any part of the body which the Almighty might have made “lesser” is to serve certain “greater” purposes of life yet unrecognized. It further emphasized on the fact that every part of our body which if we know has ceased to function, has some function that we are ignorant of and hence deserve the same degree of respect and compassion as the others.
Following this, the theme for the assembly was formally introduced and supported by an extremely visually engaging PowerPoint presentation highlighting how “special needs” is a domain that surpasses the spectrum of popular opinion. The turning point arrived with the mention and display of the engagement of our B.Ed. students with the students with special needs, of Akshar school just two days prior, to be an extremely warm and wholesome experience.
The assembly concluded by a reading from the Holy Quran- Chapter 9, verse 91. It highlighted that there is no blame on the weak, the sick, or those lacking the means if they stay behind, as long as they are true to Allah and His Messenger. There is no blame on the good-doers and Allah is all-forgiving, most merciful.
Key Perspectives
The assembly addressed two major falsehoods of special needs seclusion:
Absence of a Rationale: The seclusion of people with special needs is mostly not due to individual judgement but received wisdom.
Social Stigma: Judgment and alienation that worsen the crisis.
Together, these depictions conveyed a holistic view of seclusion as both a personal and societal issue and the need and ethic to include these people into the larger society.
Conclusion
The assembly concluded with the message that people with special needs must be treated not as a weak social segment, but as an equivalent strata that requires similar respect and compassion, as the others. It enhanced our sensitivity and sensibility, recognizing people with “special needs” but addressing them equal in being to us or enhancing the threshold of our perceived notion of “normality” so much so that it includes them as well. Since, no one is absolutely “able” or “dis-able”, it is a very subjective phenomenon and that “special needs” should never be confused with “dis-ability” or “shortcomings”.
