The Department of Sociology at Loreto College, established in the academic session 2017–18, has steadily evolved into a vibrant centre for teaching, learning, and critical engagement with contemporary social realities. Guided by the discipline’s commitment to fostering a sociological imagination, the Department enables students to move beyond commonsensical understandings and develop a systematic and analytical perspective on society, social institutions, culture, identity, inequality, and social change.
With the introduction of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme under the University of Calcutta, the Department now offers Sociology as a Major discipline, providing students with the opportunity to pursue an in-depth and comprehensive study of the subject over four years. In addition to the Major programme, the Department also offers Minor and Interdisciplinary Course (IDC) papers, allowing students from diverse academic backgrounds to engage with sociological perspectives and methodologies.
The curriculum encompasses a wide range of areas, including foundational sociological concepts, classical and contemporary sociological theories, Indian society, social stratification, gender studies, research methodology, social institutions, and emerging social issues. Through a combination of classroom teaching, discussions, field-based learning, research activities, and academic projects, students are encouraged to cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and a nuanced understanding of social phenomena.
The Department is committed to creating an intellectually stimulating environment that promotes dialogue, debate, and reflexive engagement with pressing social concerns. Regular seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and academic events are organised to expose students to contemporary developments in the discipline and to enhance the practical applicability of sociological knowledge.
Recognising the relevance of Sociology across disciplines and professions, the Department seeks to equip students with the intellectual tools necessary to understand and respond to the complexities of a rapidly changing society. By fostering both academic excellence and social awareness, the Department aims to nurture informed, responsible, and socially conscious citizens.
