On 16th February, 2026, the students of Semester 4 of the Department of B.Ed., Loreto College visited Bauria Jute Mill, established in 1914, as part of an educational industrial visit. We started our journey from the college around 9:15 am in two travellers and reached the mill premises at about 11:30 am. After arrival, we were divided into five groups, and each group was guided by an official who explained every stage of the production process in detail.
We observed how raw jute is first segregated into batches, combed and processed, then drawn, wound, and spun into yarn. The yarn is either sold or sent for weaving, where different types of jute cloth are produced. In the final finishing stage, the cloth is cut, stitched, and converted into jute bags through various finishing operations.
The officials also explained the role of different machines, the large workforce engaged in each shift, and the systems of attendance and wage calculation. We learned about labour welfare measures such as training facilities, ESI benefits, provident fund, attendance incentives, crèche support, and shift allowances. We also noticed that many sections, especially spinning and stitching, involve women workers.
Overall, the visit was highly informative and gave us a clear understanding of real industrial working conditions, production flow, and workforce management, making it a meaningful and enriching learning experience.
