Lecture by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer

Loreto College, Kolkata hosted an academic lecture by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, eminent Irish historian and faculty member at Trinity College Dublin, on 6 March 2026. The programme was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland, New Delhi, and the Honorary Consulate of Ireland in Kolkata, as part of Professor Ohlmeyer’s academic engagement with institutions of higher education in the city.

The session brought together faculty members and students from the Departments of History, Political Science, and English, creating a valuable platform for interdisciplinary academic interaction. The highlight of the programme was Professor Ohlmeyer’s lecture based on her research and her book Making Empire. In her talk, she examined Ireland’s relationship with imperial formations and its position within wider global networks.

A particularly engaging aspect of her lecture was the way in which she drew connections between Ireland and India, and especially Bengal, demonstrating how imperial histories created complex links between these regions. By highlighting these historical intersections, Professor Ohlmeyer encouraged students to think about empire not only as a European phenomenon but as a global process shaped by interactions between different societies and regions.

Following the lecture, an interactive discussion session allowed students and faculty members to engage directly with the speaker, raising questions about her research and the broader implications of her work for the study of global and imperial history.

An important component of the programme was the screening of the documentary film From That Small Island, which traces Ireland’s global historical footprint and examines the influence of Irish individuals and communities across different parts of the world. The screening was particularly significant as the film was screened for the first time in Kolkata at Loreto College, making the event a unique academic and cultural experience for the participants. The documentary complemented the themes of the lecture and offered a vivid visual perspective on Ireland’s connections with the wider world.
