Film analysis through the lens of Human Rights

An online session on “Film Analysis through the Lens of Human Rights” was conducted for Semester 6 students as part of the Human Rights course on 24th April 2026.. During the session, the Oscar-nominated short film “KABI”, written and directed by Gregg Helvey, was screened.
The film powerfully portrays pressing social issues such as child labour, bonded labour, modern forms of slavery and class conflict. It highlights the violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, dignity, freedom and child rights.
Following the screening, students were asked to critically analyse the film from a human rights perspective. The discussion reflected a deep and thoughtful engagement with the themes, as students identified structural inequalities and systemic exploitation depicted in the film.
A total of 20 students actively participated in the session.
The session moved beyond passive viewing, compelling students to critically confront real-world human rights violations and reflect on the urgent need for awareness, accountability and change.
