The Department of Education at Loreto College organized Alumnae Lecture #3 on 18 April 2026, Saturday at 11:45 a.m. in Room 308, delivered by Ms. Mehr Akhtar on the topic “Choosing the Right Career Path after Graduation.” The programme was attended by students of Semester IV and Semester VI Major and aimed to guide them in making informed career decisions, particularly by introducing them to diverse opportunities available after completing a degree in Education. A key objective of the session was to create awareness about emerging and interdisciplinary career paths, with special emphasis on Clinical Psychology, while also helping students understand the academic requirements, necessary skills, and professional scope associated with the field. The session began with a discussion on the importance of self-awareness, aptitude, and interest in choosing a career path, after which Ms. Akhtar elaborated on how a background in Education provides a strong foundation for entering Clinical Psychology due to its focus on learning processes, human development, and behaviour. She explained that students can pursue a Master’s degree in Psychology or Applied Psychology after graduation, followed by specialization in Clinical Psychology and further professional qualifications such as an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India. The speaker also highlighted various career prospects in this field, including roles as a clinical psychologist in hospitals and mental health centres, school counsellor supporting students’ emotional well-being, child psychologist dealing with developmental issues, rehabilitation specialist working with individuals with disabilities, and mental health counsellor in private or institutional settings. In addition, she drew attention to emerging opportunities such as online counselling platforms, mental health initiatives in NGOs and schools, corporate wellness programmes, and research and academic careers. Throughout the session, emphasis was placed on essential skills required for success in this field, including empathy, active listening, analytical thinking, communication skills, and emotional resilience. The lecture was interactive, with students actively participating, raising questions about eligibility, entrance examinations, and career progression, which made the session engaging and informative. The programme resulted in enhanced awareness among students regarding the scope of Clinical Psychology and the steps required to pursue it as a career, while also strengthening their ability to make informed decisions about their future. Overall, the lecture proved to be highly beneficial, broadening students’ perspectives on career opportunities after graduation and motivating them to explore meaningful and socially relevant professions in the field of mental health.
