On February 5, 2026, the Internal Complaints Committee and the Equal Opportunity Cell of Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with Sappho for Equality, Kolkata, organized an interactive session on Queer Rights. This event was attended by students of MA English, along with students from semesters 1, 3, and 5 across multiple departments.
The session highlighted Queer Rights in the sphere of education, and presented data that illustrated the disparity between officially registered cases of discrimination and the actual number of unreported cases. Students also gained an insight regarding The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, along with various state-level policies that aimed at creating equality for transgender people. Emphasis was laid on policies of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Telangana, while also exploring similar measures that could be implemented in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
A detailed discussion focused on the key issues affecting transgender people, such as, lack of reservation in educational institutes, document- driven exclusion, lack of financial support, lack of sensitization, pathologization within institutes, social exclusion and isolation, as well as bullying and harassment.
A question-and-answer session marked the conclusion of the event, followed by the vote of thanks. This interaction successfully raised awareness about the social issues faced by members of the queer community, and inspired the participants to contribute meaningfully in order to create a positive change.
