Department of Political Science
Date: 30 January 2026
Venue: Room 306

The Department of Political Science, Loreto College, organised its fourth Alumnae Lecture on 30 January 2026 for the students of Semester I. The lecture, titled “Democracy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” was delivered by Ms. Aniba Junaid, an alumna of Loreto College and currently an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Adamas University, Kolkata.

The session focused on the complex and evolving relationship between democracy and technology, conceptualising both democratic systems and artificial intelligence as fundamentally data-driven in nature. Ms. Junaid elaborated on the role of AI as a powerful data-processing mechanism that increasingly shapes democratic participation and public opinion, particularly through digital platforms such as social media.

A key emphasis of the lecture was the argument that within a democratic framework, artificial intelligence must function strictly as a co-pilot rather than a decision-maker. Ms. Junaid underscored the necessity of human oversight to address algorithmic errors, prevent bias, and ensure ethical accountability in governance. The discussion encouraged students to critically engage with questions of technological advancement and democratic integrity, highlighting this intersection as a crucial area of contemporary political inquiry.

The lecture proved to be a stimulating and insightful academic engagement, offering students a nuanced understanding of the challenges and possibilities posed by artificial intelligence in modern democratic systems.
