Organized by the Department of Political Science
An educational and an industrial visit to the Office of The Times of India was organized by the Department of Political Science of Loreto College, Kolkata on Thursday, 8th January, 2026, from 10 am onwards. It was also as part of the Value-Added Course under the department of Political Science titled, Political Campaigns and Social Media: Psephology and Electoral Studies. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure in the working of the print media and its significance for political studies.
Students from the First, Second, and Third Year of the Department of Political Science and History, Loreto College had participated in the visit. The students visited the century old building of the Times of India office and were introduced to the history and evolution of print journalism.
The visit was led by Mrs. Sayoni Choudhuri Patra, Head of the Department of Political Science, who was present with the students throughout the visit. Mr. Sunando Sarkar, Resident Editor, Bengal Bureau, The Times of India, Kolkata, conducted the session. He outlined the newsroom workflow, editorial processes, source verification practices, the use of AI in journalism, and the importance of factual accuracy, with sources like Bloomberg and PTI.
The interaction started with a question-and-answer session, on several subjects such as political reporting, photojournalism, career opportunities and the essential skills including language proficiency, writing, current affairs awareness, programming, and design. The discussion also touched on the reasons why newspapers are considered to be more accountable than the news channels that operate round the clock, especially when it comes to legal liabilities such as defamation. Students gained insights about the various career options in journalism, and the necessary skills which include language proficiency, writing ability, awareness of current affairs, basic programming, and design.
In conclusion, the visit was highly informative and enriching. The students found the session engaging and insightful, and gained valuable perspectives on media ethics, professional responsibilities, and career opportunities, taking back significant learning from this well-organized and welcoming interaction. The welcoming environment and insightful discussions provided students with valuable learning experiences and practical perspectives on media and politics.
