SPECIAL LECTURE BY PROFESSOR SOBHANLAL DATTA GUPTA
The Department of Political Science, Loreto College, Kolkata organized a special lecture for Semester VI students on April 9, 2026 on the theme “Hegel: State and Civil Society.” The lecture was delivered by Professor Sobhanlal Datta Gupta, distinguished academic and political scientist, and former Surendra Nath Banerjee Professor of Political Science, University of Calcutta.
The lecture focused on Hegel’s conceptualization of the relationship between the state and civil society, situating it within the broader framework of classical political thought and modern political theory. Professor Datta Gupta offered a lucid and insightful exposition of Hegel’s ideas, particularly emphasizing the dialectical relationship between individual interests, social institutions, and the ethical state.
The session greatly enriched the students’ understanding of Hegelian political philosophy and encouraged critical engagement with foundational concepts in political theory.
