Inauguration of SWOSTI Mental Health Services, by Department of Psychology (PG)

The SWOSTI Mental Health Services was launched on 9th September, 2025, by the Department of Psychology (PG), Loreto College, Kolkata. The Inauguration programme was commemorated by the chief guest, Prof. (Dr.) Pritha Mukhopadhyay, Professor, Department of Psychology and Dean of Science, University of Calcutta, Ms. Nandini Bhattacharya and Teacher-in-charge of Loreto College, Sister Dr. A. Nirmala.

In a significant step towards bridging the mental health care gap for underprivileged and marginalized communities, Loreto College, Kolkata, has launched SWOSTI Mental Health Services, an initiative by the Department of Psychology (PG), that combines affordable care with advanced student training. What will begin as a supervised clinical training platform for postgraduate Psychology students will evolve into a vision for accessible, inclusive, and holistic mental health support. Under expert guidance, students in their final semesters will gain hands-on experience while offering psychological assistance to those who might otherwise go untreated.

"SWOSTI is more than a clinic - it's a space of hope and healing where faculty members would train future mental health professionals while addressing the urgent need for affordable services in Kolkata". The program's next phase aims to expand its impact by inviting trained professionals - including clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric social workers, and special educators - to consult at the centre. Services will be offered at nominal rates through a sustainable revenue-sharing model, ensuring financial viability while keeping care within reach for all.

Looking ahead, SWOSTI plans to grow into an interdisciplinary hub, bringing together experts from multiple fields to offer integrated, holistic mental health care under one roof. The name SWOSTI, meaning "peace" or "well-being", captures its guiding belief: mental health care is a right, not a privilege.

This initiative is a testament to the Department's dedication to empowering its students while making a tangible difference in society, furthering Loreto College's mission of education and service.
