Framing Forgotten Footsteps: Rediscovering North Kolkata's Heritage
The History and Media Society of Loreto College hosted an interdisciplinary intercollegiate event titled Framing Forgotten Footsteps on 29 October, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The programme aimed to bridge historical inquiry with creative documentation, encouraging students to explore and preserve the fading heritage of North Kolkata through Photography and Documentary Filmmaking.
The event commenced with the Photography segment, where participants showcased striking photographs representing their poetic interpretations of North Kolkata's heritage. Each photograph was accompanied by a recitation of the poem that inspired it, beautifully blending verse and visual art to pay tribute to the city's forgotten spaces. The segment was judged by Mr. Soumitra Das, former journalist and author of A Jaywalker's Guide to Calcutta. After an engaging showcase, Ankita Dattagupta from The Heritage Academy emerged as the winner, while Sourja Sarkar from St. Xavier's College secured the runner-up position.
The programme then proceeded to the Videography segment, featuring student-made documentaries screened before an attentive audience. Each film presented unique stories of the city's past, highlighting remnants of the colonial era as well as everyday lives that continue to shape the identity of Kolkata. This segment was judged by Mr. Aditya Bikram Bhowmick, an accomplished filmmaker and cinematographer. The winning documentary, Bhobishyoter Bhut (Ghost of the Future), was created by a team of five from Presidency University, while the runner-up award was claimed by a team of four from Loreto College for their documentary Heritage Hunters.
With this initiative, Framing Forgotten Footsteps sought to rediscover the hidden narratives of the city and remind audiences that history is not confined to books or monuments but lives in the streets, voices, and everyday spaces around us.
