UN-MUN Cell

UN-MUN Cell

About

This Cell is being instituted in Loreto College with the mission of working with the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM) and Congregation of Jesus (CJ) NGO and building awareness on the work and functioning of the United Nations through MUNs. The IBVM/CJ NGO is affiliated with the United Nations, particularly through its association with ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council). In the fall of 2024, two students of our College, Ahana Ghosh and Tanashua Goswami, had the most edifying experience of being part of an internship program offered by Sister Janet Palafox, IBVM/CJ representative to the United Nations. The IBVM/ CJ NGO is affiliated with the United Nations, particularly through its association with ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council). The internship experience of the two students has been extremely gratifying and revelatory. Working with the IBVM/CJ, the girls came in contact with other interns belonging to other nations, which helped widen their horizons and receive an insider’s and outsider’s perspective on several issues affecting vulnerable people as well as rendering people vulnerable with dire consequences. The girls had the most inspiring opportunity of being part of the team engaged in the writing of oral and written statements on various issues meant for submission to the Commission on the Status of Women and the Commission for Social Development. Whilst writing the statements, the girls had to pursue in-depth research on the topics and provide a concise subjective response based on their research. Both Ahana and Tanashua have been offered to rejoin the NGO in the future and they have option doing a UN internship in New York.

Goals

  • To sustain the link established with IBVM/CJ NGO.
  • Strengthen ties with the IBVM/CJ NGO and leverage this platform for impactful engagement.
  • To continue with this excellent opportunity of doing online internships with the UN.
  • To access the opportunity for our students to take up UN internships in New York after completing an online internship.
  • This Cell will include the future interns as well as a close group of students interested in the UN, to aid the interns and simultaneously gain insight into the advocacy programs of the IBVM/CJ and develop a pool of knowledge for their own benefit in the future.
  • To make this Cell more vibrant, it will also train students for MUNs and hold MUNs on campus and participate in MUNs held in Kolkata and other parts of India if financially feasible.
  • Professional help will be sought to guide and train the students for MUNs

Selection of Students for IBVM/CJ NGO Internships with the UN

    1. Candidates must be open to committing themselves for a serious engagement during the internship. It should be taken up for a minimum period of three months for real benefit (September to December every year). As per the experience of our students who have completed the internship, it is not difficult to strike a balance between academic pressure and the internship.
    2. A topic related to the UN will be given to the candidates with adequate notice on which students will make a presentation (without reference to paper or use of a PPT). The candidates will also have to read out a 300-word write-up on why they are interested in a UN internship.
    3. A panel of judges drawn from faculty members of several departments will select the candidates. All candidates will be present for the presentations to ensure transparency.
