Loreto College UN MUN Cell: Traditional Ties, Modern Tools: Reshaping Diplomacy A lecture by Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India

The Loreto College UN MUN Cell launched its Diplomatic Engagement Series with its first session featuring Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India on July 18,2025. What was initially planned as a lecture on "Traditional Ties, Modern Tools: Reshaping Diplomacy" evolved into an engaging panel-style discussion, creating a participatory learning experience for students.

Instead of delivering a conventional talk, Dr. Fleming invited four Loreto students to serve as panellists, encouraging them to share their views on pressing global themes. Issues such as women's rights, education, and the environment dominated the discussion. For most students, this was their first experience on a panel, and they rose to the occasion by articulating their thoughts on contemporary challenges and ways forward.

Dr. Fleming complemented their perspectives with anecdotes from his diplomatic journey, illustrating how cultural understanding and people-centric diplomacy matter in today's interconnected world. The session's informal yet insightful format allowed students to engage actively, fostering critical thinking and confidence.

Following the discussion, Dr. Fleming interacted personally with students and faculty, including informal conversations on sports culture and gender disparities, highlighting how diplomacy extends beyond formal spaces into everyday dialogues. The talk was attended by students of the host College, along with students from Shri Shikshayatan College, St.Xavier's College, Rani Birla Girls College and Scottish Church College.
